The IFC has teamed up with Comcast to offer films in theaters and on-demand simultaneously. Movies will cost $5.99 each, which is a fair price for being able to watch it in the comfort of your own home. And with so many people basically having their own theater inside their homes you can bet this will expand the reach and demographics of filmmakers’ movies.
Carlo at TechDirt makes a good point when he says that right now, the fact that they have an exclusive release window is the theaters’ only “competitive metric” at the moment. Maybe, if theaters could offer the consumer more than just exponentially overpriced popcorn and a disruptive environment, people would be more willing to spend money there. For now, I’d rather sit back on my comfy couch with my OWN armrests and enjoy my movie.
