The newest tapeless camcorder to the market, the Sony DCR-SR100, has begun popping up more and more around the web. Pre-ordering has begun, although no offical release date has surfaced. Looks like JVC will have some very big competition with their own line of tapeless camcorders, the JVC Everio HDD camcorders.
The DCR-SR100 is the U.S. version of the already released Sony DCR-SR90 HDD camcorder. It features a good-sized 1/3″ CCD sensor, 2.7″ widescreen LCD, and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound recording. And of course, it records video onto an integrated 30gb hard drive. Great for those who want to do away with those lousy tapes! Rounding it out is a 10x optical zoom and a 3.3 megapixel digital still capability that will make this a tough camcorder to beat.
I’m thinking that the price point will hold many consumers away for a little while, but once the SR100 gains its footing it will probably become a favorite. That’s of course assuming that Sony doesn’t totally mess something up. I guess we will just have to wait for a good DCR-SR100 review to pop up, and hopefully soon.
