showdown.gifFirst there was the HD camcorder “shootout”, and now we have the HDV camcorder “showdown” from EventDV. This two part series will take a look at a few of the most popular HDV camcorders on the market, namely the Sony FX1/Z1U, the JVC HD100, and the Canon XL H1. The first article focuses on features and usuability of the camcorders.

In terms of ergonomics, the Canon XL H1 was the definite loser. The reviewer cites a slight tendency to tilt to the left that made it hard/impossible to operate with one hand. Also, the smaller 2.4″ LCD screen was a hindrance in operation of the Canon. Apparently, though, the JVC LCD screen, which is 3.5″, is very hard to see in sunlight.

For framing and focus, the Canon XL H1 and the JVC HD100 stood out above the Sony HDV camcorders. However, the JVC does not offer auto-focus, which could really become a burden for some.

Manual controls on the Canon were the most flexible, including aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual. The JVC and Sony only allow full automatic or full manual. The automatic gain control on the Canon was the best of the camcorders tested. The JVC on-board microphone only delivered mono sound and mediocre quality.

Overall, the reviewer seemed to like the Canon the best, but I’ll let you decide that when you read the full article.
