UVCorder.jpgThis is one of those really random, specialized devices that only about three of you will be interested in, but it does have a gadget factor to it. The UVCorder from Oculus Photonics allows you to record ultraviolet footage onto a Sony camcorder (looks like a Sony HC85 or close to it) via the Intelligent Accessory Shoe. The UVM (ultraviolet camera module) features a single CCD manufactured to respond to light in the 300-400nm range.

Images recorded by the UVCorder are 99% ultraviolet due to a special filter designed to reject visible and infared light. Still images (640×480) can be recorded onto the camcorder’s memory stick, and of course video is recorded onto standard MiniDV cassettes. The live ultraviolet video can be viewed on the camcorder’s 3.5″ LCD screen.

Forensics, dermatology, dentistry, and building inspections are just a few of the applications for this specialized equipment. The whole kit, which includes the UVM, lens, Sony camcorder, ultraviolet LED light source, and a carrying case, will cost you about $4995.
