dc40.jpgCNET’s Canon DC40 review has been posted. The DC40 is the latest of Canon’s MiniDVD line of camcorders. It features a 10x optical zoom and 2.7″ widescreen LCD, along with other features like a still shot mode that shoots 4-megapixel photos. It is also quite small, weighing in at only 1.2 pounds. How did it perform?

The design of the DC40, in CNET’s opinion, is very well thought out, though not perfect. Controls are placed in the right positions, but not as finely-controllable as they might be. The battery sits underneath the LCD screen, which allows controls to be placed on the back of the camcorder, but disallows extended life batteries.

Video quality is sharp and accurate on the Canon DC40, as one can usually expect from high-range Canon camcorders. The white balance and exposure were correct, and the image was saturated just right. Even in low-light the DC40 performed well.

If you like a few more manual controls, the Canon DC40 fits the bill, but if you like “Easy” mode, CNET suggests also looking at the Sony DVD405 and Sony DVD505.
