Toshiba and Memory-Tech have created a new type of HD DVD combo disk. This one will be a triple-layer HD DVD, but the first layer will be a standard 4.7GB DVD layer, and the second two will be HD DVD 15GB layers (i.e. one dual layer 30 GB HD DVD). This combination will also work vice-versa, with a dual layer 8.5GB DVD and and a one-layer 15GB HD DVD. Combo DVDs up until now had to be flipped over to use separate technology. This is another technology that we probably won’t see over here in the U.S. for a while, but it makes for a welcome stop-gap for the transition from DVD to HD DVD.
