Hitachi has announced that it will be working on technology to allow Blu-Ray recording to 8cm discs, which will then be used in digital camcorders. They expect this to be implemented in about two years. At CEATEC they also have mockups of what that camcorder might look like, as well as mockups of other potential tapeless camcorder designs. In my opinion they are all pretty darn ugly:
