Sony has announced three new standard definition MiniDV camcorders for this year, and I must say it’s pretty slim pickings. The first up is the Sony DCR-HC28, which features the standard entry-level 1/6″ 680K CCD sensor. The LCD screen is not widescreen but is 2.5″ in size and the “old” 4:3 aspect ratio. For optical zoom you get 25x. The next model in line offers a few more features but don’t expect to be in awe. Sony is definitely cutting away at its standard-definition tape-based line and going for HD.

The Sony DCR-HC38 features everything that its little sibling does and adds the ability to stream video via USB for use as a webcam. The DCR-HC38 features an upgrade to 40x optical zoom as well.

Finally, the Sony DCR-HC48 gives you the same size sensor but more gross pixels with 1 megapixels total. Thankfully, it features a 2.7″ widescreen LCD and even has a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot for pictures up to 1152×864. It also includes the Handycam Station, which is basically a dock for the camcorder.

All three camcorders use Sony’s new “H” series batteries that promise up to 14 hours battery life on the HC28 and HC38 and up to 10 hours on the HC48. These camcorders will be available in February. MSRP prices are as follows: DCR-HC28 - $280; DCR-HC38 - $330; DCR-HC48 - $400;
