Not really in the realm of camcorders (yet), but as we all know digital video takes up a ton of hard drive space, so new storage solutions are always of interest. It seems that InPhase Technologies has finally released their holographic storage disks and drives. For a cool $18,000 you can own your own holographic drive. Of course then you’re looking at $180 a pop for the disks, too. But when a single disk holds 300GB it does make one think of the possibilities.
The plan is for disks to increase in capacity to 1.6TB by 2010. Transfer rates are at 20Mbps, and the disks are supposed to have a lifespan of 50 years.
Unfortunately, InPhase has stated that they are not interested in the backup market at all, but are focusing their marketing toward those with archiving purposes. However, a re-writable version of the holographic storage disks is expected to be released in 2008.
