Sony has announced the XDCAM EX, a new digital camcorder aimed to compete with Panasonic’s tapeless P2 camcorders. The XDCAM EX will record footage to new SxS flash memory cards that will be compatible with Express Card slots. Featuring three huge 1/2″ sensors, the XDCAM EX will be capable of recording both 1080i and 720p at all the usual frame rates.

The SxS cards will first be available in 8GB and 16GB capacities. At about 1 hour of footage per 16GB, the XDCAM EX will be able to hold around 2 hours of video with its two SxS slots.

The XDCAM EX will be available this Fall for a very competitive price of under $8000.
