Here is a link to a great tutorial you will not want to be without. DIY Photo Gear has posted instructions on how to make your own Century Stand, or C-Stand. These stands are great for lights, reflectors, backdrops, etc. You are looking at around $30 for all the parts, and even cheaper if you build more than one.
C-Stands can cost anywhere from $70-200 when bought new, but if you have a little time and want to save a whole lot of money, check out the DIY article and you won’t be sorry.
