Studio Daily reviews Avid Xpress Pro 5.6 (recently updated to 5.7), which is now available for Mac OS X, finally making it a direct competitor with Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Although the review is of version 5.6, the update to 5.7 comes as a Universal Binary, which means it natively supports Windows, Intel-Mac, and PowerPC Macs. The review points out some of the new features and updates.

Avid Xpress Pro 5.6 upgrades from 8-bit to 10-bit processing. It also adds support for many more video formats including XDCAM HD, DVCPRO HD and HDV. The ability to mix video formats on the same timeline will also come in handy for many editors.

Studio Daily recommends Avid Xpress Pro if you need an offline editing system that handles a lot of different video formats. Plus, you can take your projects and import into higher-end Avid systems for finishing work.
