The NSC-GC1 is Sony’s first major attempt to cash in on the market for video that has been created by all the YouTube-style websites. CNET’s Sony NSC-GC1 review puts the little camcorder to the test to find out if it can pass muster and find its way into the hearts and hands of YouTubers everywhere. In their opinion, it fails…

Though it looks quite stylish, the review found the Sony NSC-GC1 was awkward and hard to hold. The menu system was unintuitive, which is unlike Sony, and the joystick controls awkwardly placed.

The Sony NSC-GC1’s fixed lens and digital zoom didn’t help the image quality, either. CNET calls it acceptable, but not good for anything else. On top of all this there is no built-in memory or included card, forcing you to buy a card unless you happen to have Memory Stick PRO Duo cards lying around.

The final verdict on the Sony NSC-GC1 is a 6 out of 10, which makes me think that you should just buy a good digital camera and use the video from that if you are only making YouTube videos. Otherwise, buy a real camcorder, for goodness sakes.

I’d have to disagree…I bought one of these a few months back with my tax refund, and I’m quite happy with it. Granted, this is serving as my first camcorder, and that could be why…

The only thing I’m not a huge fan of is the default MPG4 recording and that I can see no means of changing that on the camera. Granted, its a non-issue since I can just snag a converter, it would have been nice to set it to record in a different format.
