JVC’s GZ-MG505 digital camcorder caused quite a stir when it was announced. A hard drive based camcorder with 3 CCDs? Would this be the tapeless camcorder to narrow the gap between tapeless and tape-based camcorders? Digital Trends has their JVC GZ-MG505 review and it seems that tapeless camcorders still have a bit to go, but it’s getting better.
The JVC GZ-MG505 features 10x optical zoom, a 2.7″ widescreen LCD, and three 1/4.5″ CCDs. Digital Trends found it fairly easy to set up and navigate the menus, but onscreen icons were hard to decipher.
When it comes to the important stuff, video quality, the GZ-MG505 definitely beat out the previous generations of Everios. In fact, the reviewer says it was a “night and day” difference. Still, though the video noise was much lower than in previous Everios, the color tones were not accurate.
Looks like JVC may have a little ways to go before they will truly be respected for their HDD camcorders. Can’t wait to see how Sony’s upcoming tapeless camcorders will perform.
