JVC was the first to introduce hard drive based camcorders, and this year have expanded their lineup even further with four new standard definition models. All four models will be hybrid HDD/SDHC devices, capable of recording to either 30GB hard drive or memory card. Starting at the bottom is the JVC GZ-MG130, which features a 680K, 1/6″ CCD, 2.7″ widescreen LCD, and a 34x optical zoom. It will cost about $500 and will be available later this month. As the baseline model you can’t expect much, and the higher models come with some nice features.

For instance, the next model up, the JVC GZ-MG155 comes bundled with the new Everio Dock, a docking station with connections for computer and TV. It has both USB and Firewire ports, a unique combination for tapeless camcorders. The GZ-MG155 is also capable of taking 1 megapixel still pictures with its upgraded 1.07 megapixel sensor. It will be available in February for $600.

Up next is the JVC GZ-MG255, which features a larger 1/3.9″ (2.18 megapixel) CCD at the cost of lowering zoom down to 10x optical. This model also features JVC’s f/1.2 lens and 3D Noise Reduction technology. It will also be available in February for $700.

Finally, the JVC GZ-MG555 incorporates a huge 1/2.5″ sensor capable of taking 5 megapixel stills. This is the largest offered in this type of camcorder. You will be paying a pretty penny for this at $900. You can expect the GZ-MG555 in March.

All four JVC camcorders have new in-camera editing capabilities and One-Touch DVD burning and footage backup. Cyberlink’s PowerCinema NE for Everio, PowerProducer 3 NE, and PowerDirector 5 NE Express software is bundled with every camcorder as well.

Don Folsom Says:

Bought the JVC GZ-MG130 camcorder in mid-February during the first release. Great size, good picture quality. Better in low light than older models. Quiet hard drive, featherweight, and great zoom features. Software didn’t install correctly on first try. Software has a steep learning curve but great features. Battery time is only about 1 hr 15 minutes. Longer battery available but not for sale yet. Cool Everio dock available but not for sale yet. Registration not available online. JVC website not updated on catalog, accessories, warranty and registration. Once they get this together, more people will be interested in their products. I bought having to guess.

Israel Says:

will the GZ-MG130 record off analog a/v input? or is the A/V only for output?

terry Says:

this camera has A/V OUT…. not IN so it won’t record, but you can save movies from the computer and play it back on the camcorder or tv
