Sony dropped the official word on the HDR-CX7 (UPDATE: known as the Sony HDR-CX6 in Europe) today, which marks their foray into the world of recording HD footage onto removable memory cards. The Sony HDR-CX7 will record footage onto Sony’s Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. The CX7 is also now the smallest and lightest AVCHD camcorder in the world, but at the same time is packed with some very nice features.

At the HDR-CX7’s highest quality, you will be able to record 30 minutes of video on a 4GB card. Still pictures will be available at 6.1 megapixels from the 3.2 megapixel, 1/2.9″ ClearVid CMOS sensor.

Other features on the Sony HDR-CX7 include a 10x optical zoom, 2.7″ widescreen LCD, and optical image stabilization. The ability to record in x.v.Color is also an added benefit, but only once displays with this new color space become more available. As is customary, Sony also includes their Super NightShot infared system for recording footage in low-light situations.

Interestingly, the Sony HDR-CX7 does not come shipped with a Memory Stick PRO Duo card. This isn’t unlike current MiniDV camcorders, which don’t come with tapes in the box, and will allow you to make your own decision when it comes to capacity.

The Sony HDR-CX7 will be shipping in June for $1,200. You can pre-order now from Amazon.com
