The Sony HDR-SR8 has been announced right after the Sony HDR-SR5 and HDR-SR7, but in Europe and Canada only. The Sony HDR-SR8 records 1080i footage in the AVCHD format and is basically identical to the SR7, which includes a 10x optical zoom, 6.1 megapixel stills, and a 2.7″ widescreen LCD. So what’s the difference?

The difference is a whopping 100GB hard drive, the largest in any tapeless camcorder to date. The Sony HDR-SR8 will record 13.5 hours on the highest quality mode (15 Mbps) and over 38 hours on the lowest quality mode (5 Mbps).

No word on a U.S. release yet, but hopefully it will soon follow (see below). Pricing will be set between $1500 - $1600 and shipping will likely begin in July.

UPDATE: The HDR-SR8 is now available in the U.S. and can only be ordered directly from SonyStyle.com
